The Beginning of a Journey

Mrs. Ut’s journey with Mekong Quilts began fifteen years ago, amidst the backdrop of uncertainty and instability. A tailor by profession, she sewed clothes with an income that fluctuated unpredictably. It was through acquaintances that the mother of 3 sons learned about Mekong Quilts’ initiative to hire seamstresses, offering them the flexibility to work from home. Eager for a chance at stability and opportunity, Mrs. Ut seized the opportunity and applied to join Mekong Quilts. Her application was accepted, marking the beginning of a transformative chapter in her life.

From Seamstress to Leader

Over the course of seven years with Mekong Quilts, Mrs. Ut’s skills as a quilter flourished under the organization’s guidance and support. Her dedication and commitment to the craft propelled her forward, earning her recognition and respect among her peers. In a testament to her talent and leadership, Mrs. Ut was appointed as the leader of the quilting group, entrusted with overseeing production and ensuring quality. Today, she leads a group of 14 quilters and is responsible for recruiting and training local women artisans, so they can match the high quality standard of Mekong Quilts while achieving financial independence as well.

This milestone marked a significant turning point in Mrs. Ut’s journey, affirming her role as a trailblazer and mentor within the Mekong Quilts community. Mrs. Ut fondly reflects, “One of the most memorable and rewarding experiences I had while working with Mekong Quilts, was going to Cambodia to meet other quilters over there and share techniques and learn from each other’s experiences. Previously, I never thought I would have the opportunity to visit a neighboring country to exchange knowledge and learn in such a way.”

Quilting: A Source of Stability and Empowerment

For Mrs. Ut, quilting transcends the realms of craftsmanship; it is a source of stability, empowerment, and pride. Through her work with Mekong Quilts, Mrs. Ut has found not only a means of livelihood but also a sense of purpose and agency. The stable income provided by her work allows her to care for her children while pursuing her passion for quilting. Her eldest son graduated from the university and has become a doctor while her two younger sons are studying in grade 12. A few years back, Mrs. Ut and her husband were also able to afford the construction of a new and more spacious house. Moreover, her financial independence has amplified her voice within her family, empowering her to contribute meaningfully to household decisions and financial planning. The same goes for all of her team members, of course.

“Before becoming quilters, most of my team members used to work far from their families to earn a living. Now, they can both work and earn income while being able to take their children to school and spend more time with their families. They are all very happy with this job,” Mrs. Ut relates.
